The PFM Revitalized

Obsidian Fused to Metal restorations are state-of-the-art PFMs for today’s clinician. They are over four times stronger and achieve two times more chip resistance than conventional feldspathic porcelains. By pressing lithium silicate ceramic, rather than traditional porcelain, to metal the finished restorations achieve far greater strength than that of their predecessors. These natural-looking, chip-resistant restorations are ideal for areas where monolithic restorations are contraindicated, such as covering dark preps or endodontic posts when occlusal reduction or vertical dimension is limited.

Dental Advisor Obsidian Fused to Metal

The Dental Advisor

After a one-year recall, the Dental Advisor conducted a clinical performance on Obsidian Fused to Metal, evaluating areas such as esthetics, lack of sensitivity and resistance to fracture/chipping. This independent study reveals how Obsidian performed and provides important clinical findings on the material.

Clinical Studies

Transform Any Part of the Mouth

This patient had worn through the existing PFMs. Obsidian Fused to Metal is ideal for crowns & bridges anywhere in the arch and it was used to provide this patient natural-looking, chip-resistant restorations in the posterior.

Stronger, More Esthetic

This female patient presented to the operatory with an existing PFM bridge on teeth #29–31. After the restoration was removed and the preparation cleaned, an Obsidian Fused to Metal bridge was seated. The new bridge was much more esthetic and stronger than the previous restoration.

High Strength for High Impact

This patient's molar had been previously restored with amalgam. The deteriorating state of the tooth warranted a new restoration. An Obsidian Fused to Metal crown was used due to its high strength, which is ideal for areas that experience great occlusal forces.

Clinical Tips

The dental professional should use conventional, adhesive resin or self-adhesive resin cement for luting Obsidian. Adhesive cementation requires salinization or conditioning of the bonding surface of the restoration. Adhesive cement is preferred for inlay, onlay, and partial crown. Anterior and posterior full restorations can be cemented with conventional, adhesive resin or self-adhesive resin cements. The inside of the POM crown may need to be sandblasted prior to seating in order to prepare the bonding surface for cementation. Refer to the user manual for more detailed sandblasting instructions.
